CONFIDENT SHOTGUNNING

Shotgun Shooting Instruction
Recommendations

To help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, shotgun recoil should be minimized.  To that end, appropriate shotgun and ammunition are strongly encouraged.
  • Shotguns - 12 gauge or 20 gauge autoloader or over/under are recommended.  Students weighing 80-100 pounds should use a 20 gauge autoloader or light weight 12 gauge autoloader to ensure safety and comfort.
  • Ammunition - 12 gauge ammunition should be 7/8 to 1 ounce of #7 1/2 or #8 lead shot, 2 3/4 dram equivalent of powder (1,100 to 1,200 feet per second).  20 gauge ammunition should be 7/8 ounce of #7 1/2 or #8 lead shot, 2 1/2 dram equivalent of powder (1,100 to 1,200 feet per second).   More shot and/or velocity are not recommended.

Students with minimal shotgun experience should expect to shoot one to two boxes of shells (25-50 shells) per hour; beginning Students should expect to shoot two to three boxes per hour; experienced Students should expect to shoot three or more boxes per hour.  Although a shotgun can be rented, Students are encouraged to use their own shotgun and bring their own ammunition; however, if the Student brings inappropriate equipment, Instructor reserves the right to replace the equipment with a shotgun and/or ammunition more suited to the instruction being provided.
